“Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Within the sound of silence”
“The sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel
Songs come and go in my brain while I create new pieces. Ideas come and go. Many things come and go since the process of editing takes a few hours. Inspired by the “Life of Pie” movie, I knew that I wanted to create a version of this image the minute I took the original photo. As I played with it, it was more than just dropping a night sky and replacing the water that she was on. I wanted to tell a story. This is the story of Silence and in silence you can learn so much.
My character is dreaming (which I like to symbolize with several moons, shaped and sized in a way that would not be from our world). She is on a boat alone (similar to Pi) with her head turned up facing the fuller and larger moon. A lot of my images are about duality and this image is no different. She is facing the big moon and has her back turned to the smaller half moon. Perhaps she is turning away from who she is and is turned to what she wants to be? Or perhaps her old ways of being no longer serve her and she has chosen to face a newer and better opportunity?
And that even though she is surrounded by darkness, she is also guided by light. For me, personally, I appreciate the darkness because it helps me to see the light but the opposite doesn’t always work for me – I cannot always see the darkness in the light (although often I do sense inklings of it). She is also surrounded by calm water, versus choppy water which only helps the feeling of silence transcend even further in this image (it almost reminds me of the silence you hear when it is snowing outside with no wind – just pure calmness).
Lastly I wanted to talk about color. I used many tones of blue and purple because not only are they symbolic of the night but they also mean wisdom, creativity and mystery. Her dress is blue (wisdom) and she holds the wisdom to make the right choice if she just sits in silence and listens to her inner self.
Silence and darkness often surround us, but it is up to us whether we choose to pursue the darkness further or listen to the infinite universal wisdom – which speaks when we are truly silent – and follow the light.
